Why 15.7 and 15.9?
A ductless, wall-mounted heat pump with a cooling capacity not exceeding 20 kW, using an A1 or A2 refrigerant or a mixture of both, can fall under subclass 15.9 alone. For a central heat pump connected to a forced-air system, the regulation requires the appropriate refrigeration subclass (15.9 or 15.10) together with an applicable heating or ventilation subclass. For single-family dwellings, duplexes, townhouses and private portions of multi-family buildings held in divided co-ownership, subclass 15.7 (Residential Ventilation) is generally appropriate; depending on the building and system, 15.1 or 15.8 may apply instead. When combined with the appropriate subclass, 15.9 also covers qualifying forced-air heating and cooling equipment not exceeding 40 kW.
This path prepares you for RBQ exams 15.7 and 15.9.

15.9 or 15.10?

  • 15.9 Small Refrigeration Systems: air-conditioning systems with a cooling capacity not exceeding 20 kW using an A1 or A2 refrigerant, or a mixture of both; also qualifying forced-air heating and cooling equipment up to 40 kW with the appropriate subclass.
  • 15.10 Refrigeration: construction work not reserved exclusively for master pipe-mechanics on refrigeration systems, including commercial air conditioning, cold rooms and industrial processes, with no specified capacity limit.
