Why 15.10 and 15.8?
Subclass 15.10 Refrigeration covers construction work not reserved exclusively for master pipe-mechanics on any refrigeration system, including air conditioning, industrial processes and product preservation (cold rooms). For the heating and air-conditioning devices of a forced-air system, the regulation requires a refrigeration subclass (15.9 or 15.10, depending on the system) combined with the appropriate subclass 15.1, 15.1.1, 15.7 or 15.8. The 15.10 + 15.8 combination allows contractors to carry out this work without the capacity limits that apply to subclass 15.9. Unlike 15.7, which is limited to single-family dwellings, duplexes, townhouses and private portions of multi-family buildings held in divided co-ownership, 15.8 is not limited to these types of buildings.
This path prepares you for RBQ exams 15.10 and 15.8.

15.10 or 15.9?

  • 15.10 Refrigeration: any refrigeration system, with no capacity limit (commercial air conditioning, cold rooms, industrial processes).
  • 15.9 Small Refrigeration Systems: air-conditioning systems with a cooling capacity not exceeding 20 kW using an A1 or A2 refrigerant, or a mixture of both. The subclass also covers heating and air-conditioning devices of forced-air or hydronic systems up to 40 kW using the same refrigerants, provided the contractor also holds the appropriate subclass (15.1, 15.1.1, 15.7 or 15.8 for forced-air systems; 15.4 or 15.4.1 for hydronic systems). See the Heat Pump Installer path (15.7 + 15.9).
